The Blacksburg Chinese School of VPI, an academic language and culture center for children and adults staffed by community volunteers and instructors, was founded by Dr. Joseph Wang, Professor Emeritus and founding member of the School of Architecture and Design. It was officially registered with the IRS as a non-profit organization in 1979. It was renamed the Blacksburg Chinese School in 2010 when Xiaojin Moore became the principal.
