The founding of Sigma Psi Zeta Sorority, Inc. at Virginia Tech marked the emergence of the first Asian/Asian American interest Greek organization on campus. The organization was founded by San-Young Hwang, Elaine Kwan, An Tran, and Van Tran on January 14, 2001. This was the beginning of a wave of Asian and/or Multicultural Interest Greek Organizations as follows below in the timeline.
"The fundamental goal of Sigma Psi Zeta Sorority is to promote awareness of the Asian/Asian-American cultures. Our sorority addresses this issue through leadership, outreach, individual, community interaction, and most importantly the bonds of sisterhood".
