This is an oral interview of Dr. Sweta Baniya conducted by Gayatri Kamtala. Dr. Sweta Baniya is an assistant professor of rhetoric, professional and technical writing at Virginia Tech. Her work focuses on transnational disaster studies, risk and crisis communication, non-Western rhetorical traditions, and community engagement. In this interview, Dr. Baniya juxtaposes her childhood in Nepal with her postgraduate life in the United States and recounts her negative immigration journey and experiences of discrimination in academia. Dr. Baniya also details how she is able to incorporate her Nepali identity and feminist theory into her scholarly work, from her Master’s theses and her PhD dissertation to her three current novels in the midst of being published.
